The more I researched the collage artist, the more I was fascinated and inspired by the minimal work that I discovered. Four, sometimes even only two images can create an impressive and powerful art when put together right in a composition. I found particularly stimulating and intriguing the works of Man Ray, John Steazaker, Mari Mahr, and Sarah Eyre. I searched Instagram and found some incredible collage art. I am especially fond of #edinburgcollagecollective and #brooklyncollagecollective, where I saw many collages that made me reflect and, I believe, advance my practice.
With the minimalistic method in mind, I looked through hundreds of pictures in my collage box and picked only a few that immediately made me feel something. I set them aside and put the collages, which were already assembling naturally during the search, together. I tried a few different options before finalizing the work. I found it conducive to take photos of the options I am to choose from on my phone, then comparing them to see which version is favored. After a few hours of inventing, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I created two minimalistic (I hope) collages.
As well as researching many artists, I watched some youtube videos for more insight into a collage. I was especially fascinated by a new technique I have never heard about before – packing tape transfer. I am hoping to experiment with it shortly.
